Magic 8 Ball

Type a yes or no question, or just hold one in your head, then press Shake to reveal one of the twenty classic Magic 8 Ball replies inside the ball. The answers split ten positive, five non-committal, and five negative, exactly like the original toy. Each shake is an independent random draw, so the same answer can come up twice in a row.

Frequently asked questions

What answers can the Magic 8 Ball give?

The canonical twenty. Ten are affirmative such as 'It is certain', 'Yes definitely' and 'Outlook good', five are non-committal such as 'Reply hazy, try again' and 'Ask again later', and five are negative such as 'My reply is no' and 'Very doubtful'.

Do I have to type a question?

No. The question box is only there to set the mood; it is never read, stored, or sent anywhere. You can leave it blank and shake as often as you like.

How does it choose an answer?

Each shake picks one of the twenty answers at random with your browser's Math.random. Every answer has the same one-in-twenty chance, so the reply is not weighted toward yes or no.

Can I get the same answer twice in a row?

Yes. Draws are independent, so nothing stops the same reply appearing on consecutive shakes. It is not a shuffle that cycles through all twenty before repeating.

Are the odds really ten yes, five maybe, five no?

Yes. The answer list matches the classic toy, so a shake is twice as likely to be positive as negative. On any single shake the chance of a positive reply is fifty percent.

Is the Magic 8 Ball real fortune telling?

No. It is a novelty toy for entertainment. The answers are random and carry no real predictive power, so treat them as fun rather than genuine advice.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The ball is a plain web page, so it works in any modern mobile or desktop browser, and once loaded it keeps working with no connection.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. Every shake runs locally in your browser and nothing about your question or answer leaves your device, so the tool stays private.
