Frequently asked questions

What can I use the random picker for?

Anything that needs an impartial choice: raffle and giveaway winners, picking who goes first, choosing where to eat, assigning chores, or breaking a tie. Paste the options, pick how many you need, and draw.

What is the difference between picking with and without repeats?

Without repeats (the default) each entry can win at most once, which is what you want for prizes. With repeats turned on the same entry can be drawn again, so you can pick more results than there are entries, like rolling a die.

Is the pick actually fair and random?

Yes. It uses an unbiased shuffle, so every entry has an equal chance and no position in the list is favored. Each draw is independent, so running it again can give a different winner.

What about duplicate entries or ties?

Every line is treated as its own entry, so a name listed twice has twice the chance of winning, which is handy for weighted raffles. There are never ties in the result because the winners are drawn one at a time.

Can I pick more than one winner at a time?

Yes. Set how many to pick and the tool draws that many at once. In the default mode they are all different entries; you cannot pick more winners than you have entries unless you allow repeats.

Is my list private?

Yes. The drawing runs entirely in your browser and your list is never uploaded to a server.
