Discount Chain Calculator
Stacked discounts do not simply add up. Enter a price and a chain of percentages to see the price after each step, the total savings and the true effective discount.
How to stack discounts
- Enter the starting price.
- Add each discount percent in the order it is applied.
- Read the price after each step, the total savings and the effective discount.
Examples
20% then 10% off $100
price 100, discounts 20% and 10%
final $72, effective 28% off
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't 20% plus 10% equal to 30% off?
Each discount applies to the already reduced price. 20% off 100 is 80, then 10% off 80 is 72, an effective 28% off.
Does the order of discounts matter for the total?
No. Multiplying percentages is commutative, so the final price is the same regardless of order, though the intermediate steps differ.
What is the effective discount percent?
It is total savings divided by the original price. It is always less than the sum of the individual discounts.
Are the results rounded?
Yes. The price after each step and the final price are rounded to the nearest cent.
Is my data private?
Yes. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
