Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by the discount percent divided by 100 to get the savings, then subtract that from the price. For example, 20% off $100 is $100 x 0.20 = $20 saved, leaving a final price of $80.

How do I find the discount percentage from a sale price?

Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price, then multiply by 100. A $100 item on sale for $75 is (100 - 75) / 100 x 100 = 25% off.

How do I work out the sale price after a discount?

The sale price equals the original price times one minus the discount as a decimal: price x (1 - discount/100). So $80 with 25% off becomes $80 x 0.75 = $60.

How do stacked or coupon-on-sale discounts work?

Stacked discounts apply one after another, not added together. A 20% discount followed by a 10% coupon is 0.8 x 0.9 = 0.72, so 28% off in total, not 30%. Run each step through the calculator in turn.

Does this calculator include sales tax?

No. It shows the price before tax. Tax is usually added to the discounted price at checkout, so apply your local tax rate to the final price if you need the out-the-door total.
