Sales Tax Calculator

Work out sales tax in seconds. Add tax to a pre-tax price to get the total a customer pays, or run it in reverse to pull the tax out of a tax-inclusive total.

How to use the sales tax calculator

  1. Pick a mode: add tax to a price, or reverse it out of a total.
  2. Enter the amount and your sales tax rate (decimals like 8.25 are fine).
  3. Read off the pre-tax price, the tax amount and the total.

Examples

Add 8.25% tax to a $100 item

Price 100, rate 8.25%, mode add
Tax 8.25, total 108.25

Reverse tax from a $108.25 receipt

Total 108.25, rate 8.25%, mode reverse
Pre-tax price 100.00, tax 8.25

Frequently asked questions

How is sales tax calculated?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate as a decimal. At 8.25%, tax on $100 is 100 * 0.0825 = $8.25, so the total is $108.25.

How do I find the tax in a price that already includes it?

Use reverse mode. It divides the total by 1 plus the rate to get the pre-tax price, then subtracts that from the total. So $108.25 at 8.25% is $100 plus $8.25 of tax.

Do sales tax rates vary by state?

Yes. In the US there is no national sales tax. Rates are set by states, counties and cities, so the combined rate at checkout depends on where the sale happens. A few states have no statewide sales tax at all.

Is shipping taxed?

It depends on the state. Some tax shipping and handling, others exempt separately stated shipping charges. Check your state's rules, since this calculator works on whatever taxable amount you enter.

What rate should I enter?

Enter the combined rate that applies to the sale, which is the state rate plus any local add-ons. You can type decimals such as 7.5 or 8.25.

Does this tool store the numbers I enter?

No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere or saved.
