Frequently asked questions

What is GST?

GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is an indirect tax charged on most goods and services. The seller collects it from the buyer and pays it to the government. A price can be quoted before GST (exclusive) or with GST already in it (inclusive).

How do I add GST to a price?

Multiply the net amount by the rate as a decimal to get the tax, then add it back. For example, 1,000 at 18% gives 1,000 x 0.18 = 180 GST, and a gross total of 1,180. Use Add GST mode for this.

How do I remove GST from a price?

Divide the gross, tax-inclusive amount by 1 plus the rate as a decimal to get the net. For 1,180 at 18%, the net is 1,180 / 1.18 = 1,000, so the GST included is 180. Use Remove GST mode for this reverse calculation.

What are the common GST slabs?

India uses four main GST rates: 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Some essentials are exempt or taxed at 0%, while a few items carry an extra cess. The calculator includes quick-picks for the four common slabs and lets you type any custom rate.

What is the difference between GST inclusive and exclusive?

An exclusive (net) price has GST added on top at checkout, so the buyer pays more than the listed figure. An inclusive (gross) price already contains the GST, so no tax is added at the till. Add mode handles exclusive prices and Remove mode handles inclusive ones.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or shared.
