Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate average order value?
Divide total revenue by the number of orders over the same period. For example, $10,000 in revenue from 200 orders gives an average order value of $50. Use net revenue (after discounts, before or after shipping depending on your reporting) and be consistent across periods.
Why does average order value matter?
AOV tells you how much each order is worth on average, which directly affects how much you can profitably spend to acquire a customer and how quickly ad spend pays back. Raising AOV through bundles, upsells, free-shipping thresholds or cross-sells lifts revenue without needing more traffic, so it is one of the highest-leverage ecommerce metrics.
What is revenue per visitor and how is it different from AOV?
Revenue per visitor (RPV) is total revenue divided by visitors, so it blends both how often people buy (conversion rate) and how much they spend per order (AOV). AOV looks only at buyers. RPV is useful for judging the overall value of traffic, while AOV isolates basket size.
Should I include shipping and taxes in the revenue?
Be consistent with how your analytics platform reports it. Many stores measure AOV on product revenue after discounts and exclude shipping and tax, matching their ecommerce reports. Whatever you choose, use the same definition every time so trends stay comparable.
How can I increase my average order value?
Common tactics include product bundles, volume discounts, post-purchase or cart upsells, cross-sell recommendations, and free-shipping or gift thresholds set just above your current AOV. Test one change at a time and re-check AOV here to see the impact.
