Box Fill Calculator

Work out how many items fit inside a box using a simple grid pack. Enter the inner box size and a single item size to see how many fit along each axis and the total count.

How to calculate items per box

  1. Enter the inner box length, width and height in inches.
  2. Enter the item length, width and height in inches.
  3. Read how many items fit along each axis.
  4. See the total number of items that fit in the box.

Examples

Cubes in a cube

12 x 12 x 12 in box, 4 x 4 x 4 in item
3 by 3 by 3, total 27 items

Flat items in a shallow box

20 x 16 x 10 in box, 5 x 4 x 2 in item
4 by 4 by 5, total 80 items

Frequently asked questions

How does the box fill calculation work?

It divides each inner box dimension by the matching item dimension and rounds down, giving how many items fit along the length, width and height. Multiplying those three counts gives the total items in a single fixed-orientation grid.

Could rotating items fit more?

Often yes. This tool keeps a single fixed orientation, so spinning items to align a shorter side with a tight axis, or mixing orientations, can fit more. Try swapping the item length, width and height to compare orientations.

Should I use inner or outer box dimensions?

Use the inner usable dimensions. Box walls take up space, so measuring inside the box avoids overestimating the count. Leave a little slack if items need to slide in and out easily.

Why does the total show zero?

If any item dimension is larger than the matching box dimension, that axis fits zero items and the total is zero. Check the orientation, use inner box dimensions, or pick a larger box.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved, so your box and item sizes stay private on your device.
