Word Counter

A word is any unbroken run of non-space characters, so words are split on spaces, tabs, and line breaks. Several spaces in a row still act as one separator, and a hyphenated term like well-known counts as a single word because it has no space inside it.

It shows both figures. The 'characters' tile counts everything including spaces and line breaks, while 'characters (no spaces)' strips out all whitespace first. On a 54 character sentence with 10 spaces, that second tile reads 44.

Reading time divides the word count by an average silent reading speed of 200 words per minute, then rounds to one decimal place. Short passages can round to 0 min, and the figure is a rough guide since real reading speed depends on the reader and the material.

The counter tallies runs of period, exclamation, or question marks. Because a run counts once, an ellipsis like '...' or an emphatic '!!!' is treated as a single sentence boundary, and abbreviations such as 'Dr.' can inflate the count slightly.

Paragraphs are non-empty blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines. Single line breaks inside a block do not start a new paragraph, so a hard-wrapped address on consecutive lines still counts as one paragraph.

Yes. Counts are Unicode aware, so accented letters, Cyrillic, Chinese, and other scripts are supported. Emoji are counted by their underlying code units, so a single emoji built from several code points may add more than one to the character total.
