Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

A word is any run of non-space characters, so words are separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks. Multiple spaces in a row still count as one separator.

Does the character count include spaces?

It shows both. The 'characters' count includes spaces and line breaks, while 'characters (no spaces)' strips out all whitespace.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time uses an average silent reading speed of 200 words per minute, then rounds to one decimal place. It is a guide, not an exact figure.

How are sentences and paragraphs counted?

Sentences are counted by runs of period, exclamation or question marks. Paragraphs are non-empty blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines.

Does it handle emoji and other languages?

Yes. Counts are Unicode aware, so accented letters and non-Latin scripts work. Emoji are counted as characters by their underlying code units.

Is my text private?

Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
