Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters with spaces counts every keystroke, including spaces, tabs and line breaks. Without spaces ignores all whitespace, which is useful when a limit only counts visible letters.

Which social media and SEO limits does it check?

It shows live remaining counts for X (Twitter) at 280 characters, a single SMS segment at 160, and the common 160 character meta description target for search snippets.

What counts as one character?

Every letter, number, punctuation mark, space and symbol counts as one character. Line breaks are also counted in the total but not in the no-spaces figure.

How are emoji and accented letters counted?

They count as one character each. The tool counts by Unicode code point, so an emoji like 👍 or a letter like é is a single character rather than two.

How are words and lines counted?

Words are runs of non-whitespace separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks. Lines are split on every line break, so a single paragraph with no breaks is one line.

Is my text private?

Yes. Counting happens entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
