Character Counter

Characters with spaces counts every keystroke, including spaces, tabs and line breaks. Characters without spaces strips all whitespace first, which matters when a limit only counts visible letters. In the two line example above, 17 characters becomes 14 once the space and the line break are removed.

It shows live remaining counts against three common limits: X (Twitter) at 280 characters, a single SMS segment at 160, and the 160 character meta description target for search snippets. Each chip lists the limit and how many characters remain, or how many you are over.

Each counts as a single character. The tool measures by Unicode code point, so an emoji like 🚀 counts as one rather than the two UTF-16 units it occupies in memory. A precomposed accented letter such as é also counts as one. Note that some emoji built from several joined code points, like certain flags or skin tone variants, can still count as more than one.

Words are runs of non-whitespace separated by any spaces, tabs or line breaks, and leading or trailing whitespace is ignored. Lines are counted by splitting on each line break, so a single paragraph with no breaks is one line and empty text is zero lines. Windows, Mac and Unix line endings are all recognized.

It matches for plain text, but each platform has quirks. X weights links and some CJK characters differently, and SMS switches to a shorter 70 character segment when it uses Unicode encoding for emoji or accents. Treat the chips as a close guide rather than the platform's own final tally.

There is no fixed cap. Counting runs in your browser, so the practical ceiling is your device memory, and even long documents update almost instantly. Very large pastes of many megabytes may briefly lag on slower machines.
