Add Bates Numbers to a PDF

Apply Bates numbers to every page of a PDF: a prefix, a zero-padded running number, and an optional suffix, continuous across the whole document. Choose where the stamp sits, the starting number, and the padding, then download the labeled file. Everything runs in your browser with pdf-lib, so the PDF never leaves your device, which matters for confidential legal documents.

Frequently asked questions

What is Bates numbering?

Bates numbering is a legal and business convention of stamping every page of a document with a unique, sequential identifier, such as ABC-000123. It combines an optional prefix, a zero-padded running number, and an optional suffix so pages can be referenced precisely during discovery and review.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The stamping runs entirely in your browser with pdf-lib. The PDF never leaves your device, so confidential and privileged documents stay private.

Can I set the prefix, starting number, and padding?

Yes. Choose any prefix and suffix, the number the first page starts from, and how many digits the number is zero-padded to. The number then counts up by one on each following page, continuous across the whole document.

Where on the page does the Bates number appear?

You can place it in the bottom or top, aligned left, center, or right. That is six positions in total. The bottom-right corner is the most common choice for legal productions.

Will Bates numbering change the rest of my PDF?

No. The original text, images, and layout are untouched. The tool only draws a small identifier in the margin of each page using a built-in font.
