Frequently asked questions

What is a pace count?

A pace is counted every other step, one count per two foot-falls. Your pace count is how many of those you take to cover 100 meters.

How do I calibrate my pace count?

Walk a measured 100 meter course at a natural stride and count your paces. Repeat a few times and average for a reliable number.

Is this exact?

It is a planning aid. Your pace count changes with terrain, slope, load, footing and fatigue, so recalibrate for the conditions you expect.

Why count every other step?

Counting one pace per two steps roughly halves the count, which is easier to track over long legs. It is the standard military convention.

How do I track paces in the field?

Many navigators use pace beads or ranger beads, sliding one bead every 100 meters so they do not have to hold the running total in their head.
