Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need per hour of hiking?

About half a liter per hour is a common baseline in mild weather. Hot or strenuous days can push that to three quarters of a liter or more.

Is this a precise medical recommendation?

No. It is a planning guideline only. Real needs vary with heat, altitude, body size, effort, diet and how much you sweat.

What counts as hot or strenuous?

Hot means high temperatures or strong sun. Strenuous means steep, fast or heavily loaded hiking. Both raise how fast you lose fluids.

Should I also carry electrolytes?

On long, hot or sweaty hikes, yes. Plain water alone can leave you low on sodium. Electrolyte mixes or salty snacks help you stay balanced.

Can I refill on the trail instead of carrying it all?

Often yes, if reliable water sources exist. Always treat or filter wild water, and carry enough to reach the next safe refill point.
