How to check your pack weight

  1. Enter your body weight in pounds.
  2. Choose daypack or backpacking.
  3. Optionally enter your loaded pack weight.
  4. See the recommended max, your percent and whether you are within it.

Examples

body 160 lb, pack 35 lb, backpacking
Max 32 lb, pack is 21.9% of body weight, over the limit

Frequently asked questions

How heavy should my backpack be?

A common rule of thumb is up to 20 percent of body weight for backpacking and around 10 percent for a daypack. Lighter is usually easier.

Are these limits exact?

No. They are planning guidelines only. Fitness, trail terrain, distance, pack fit and experience all change what is comfortable.

What if my pack is over the limit?

Look for heavy or duplicate items to leave behind, choose lighter gear, or carry less water and food between resupply points.

Does pack fit matter as much as weight?

Yes. A well fitted hip belt transfers load to your hips and can make a heavier pack feel lighter than a poorly fitted lighter one.

Should children carry the same percentage?

Children and teens should generally carry a smaller share of body weight. When in doubt, keep their loads light and check with a guide.
