Frequently asked questions

What percentage is an A?

On the standard scale a plain A runs from 93 to 96 percent, an A plus is 97 and above, and an A minus is 90 to 92. This tool uses that common breakdown.

What letter grade is failing?

Anything below 60 percent is an F, which carries 0.0 GPA points. A D minus at 60 to 62 is the lowest passing grade on this scale.

How are GPA points assigned?

Each letter maps to 4.0-scale points: A and A plus are 4.0, A minus is 3.7, B plus is 3.3, and so on down to 0.0 for an F. The tool shows the points beside the letter.

Do schools use the same scale?

Most use a scale close to this one, but cutoffs vary. Some treat 90 and above as a flat A, or skip plus and minus grades, so always check your school's policy.

What happens right at a boundary?

Boundaries are inclusive at the lower edge. A score of exactly 90 is an A minus, and 89.9 rounds down to a B plus, matching how most gradebooks work.
