Average Calculator

Paste a list of numbers to get the mean, median and mode at once, plus the range, sum, count, minimum and maximum. Everything updates as you type.

How to find the average of a list

  1. Type or paste your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
  2. Read the mean (the everyday average) from the first result card.
  3. Compare it with the median and mode, and check the range, sum and count.

Examples

Simple list

1, 2, 3, 4
Mean = 2.5, median = 2.5, no mode, sum = 10, count = 4

List with a repeated value

4, 8, 8, 10, 20
Mean = 10, median = 8, mode = 8, range = 16

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the sum of every value divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value once the list is sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often. They can all be different for the same list.

When should I use the median instead of the mean?

Use the median when the list has outliers or a skewed spread, such as incomes or house prices. A few very large or very small values pull the mean toward them, while the median stays near the center of the data.

How do outliers affect the average?

Outliers move the mean a lot because every value goes into the sum. The median barely changes because it only depends on the middle position, and the mode does not change unless the outlier is the most common value.

What does it mean when there is no mode?

If every number appears the same number of times, there is no single most frequent value, so this calculator reports no mode. When several values tie for the most appearances, it lists all of them.

How do I enter my numbers?

Separate values with commas, spaces or new lines, so you can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet. Empty gaps are ignored, and anything that is not a number is flagged.

Does this calculator send my data anywhere?

No. The math runs entirely in your browser, so your numbers never leave your device.
