Gold Scrap Value Calculator

Estimate the melt value of scrap or karat gold from its weight and purity. Enter the item weight in grams, the karat stamp such as 10k or 18k, and today's spot price either per gram or per troy ounce. The tool works out the pure gold content using the karat divided by 24 and multiplies it by the per gram price to show the melt worth.

How to value scrap gold

  1. Weigh the piece on a gram scale and enter the figure in the Weight (grams) field.
  2. Type the karat in the Karat field, or pick a common value like 10, 14, 18, 22 or 24 from the suggestions.
  3. In the Spot price as menu, choose Per gram or Per troy ounce to match the quote you have.
  4. Enter today's gold spot price in the box that appears; the tool never fetches prices for you.
  5. Read the melt value, the pure gold content and the per gram price used, then click Copy result.

Frequently asked questions

How is gold melt value calculated?

Pure gold content is the weight times the karat divided by 24, and melt value is that content times the spot price per gram. A per troy ounce price is first divided by 31.1034768 to get the per gram price, then applied.

What is the purity of each karat?

Karat is parts of gold out of 24. So 24k is 100 percent, 22k is about 91.67 percent, 18k is 75 percent, 14k is about 58.33 percent and 10k is about 41.67 percent pure gold by weight.

Why do I have to enter the spot price myself?

The tool stays deterministic and private, so it never calls out for live quotes. Look up the current gold spot price from a market source and type it in for an up to date figure.

Do you use gross weight or pure gold weight?

Enter the gross weight of the whole gold item in grams. The tool derives the pure gold content from the karat you provide, so you do not need to strip out the alloy yourself.

Will a buyer actually pay the full melt value?

Usually not. Refiners, pawn shops and cash for gold buyers pay a percentage of melt to cover assaying, refining and profit, often 70 to 90 percent for clean scrap and less for mixed lots.

How many grams are in a troy ounce?

A troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 grams, heavier than the 28.35 gram avoirdupois ounce used for food. Precious metals are always quoted per troy ounce, which is why the tool converts using that constant.

Does it value diamonds, gemstones or branding?

No. It only prices the gold metal content. Diamonds, colored stones, designer branding and craftsmanship can add resale value well beyond the melt figure, so treat melt as a floor.

What karat values are allowed?

Any karat from just above 0 up to 24. Values above 24 are rejected because 24k is pure gold. If you only know a fineness like 750, divide by 1000 and multiply by 24 to get the karat, so 750 is 18k.

Is my data private?

Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser using the numbers you type. Nothing about your weight, karat or price is uploaded, logged or stored anywhere.
