Background Blur (Portrait Mode)

Get a phone-style portrait mode right in your browser. An AI segmentation model finds the subject of your photo and blurs only the background behind it, so your subject stays crisp while everything behind them melts into a soft, out-of-focus blur. Drag the blur-strength slider for anything from a gentle depth-of-field to a heavy bokeh effect, and feather the edge so the subject blends in naturally. The model downloads once on first use, then runs entirely on your device: your photo is never uploaded.

How to blur a photo background

  1. Drop a photo in, or click to browse. One with a clear subject works best.
  2. Wait a few seconds while the AI separates the subject from the background.
  3. Drag the blur strength (and feather) until the portrait looks right, then download the PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The AI model runs entirely in your browser with WebAssembly, so your photo is processed on your device and never uploaded. Only the model itself is downloaded, once, then cached.

How is this different from the plain Blur Image tool?

The Blur Image tool blurs the whole picture (or a rectangle you draw). This tool uses AI to detect the subject and blurs only the background behind it, keeping the subject sharp, the way phone portrait mode does.

How is this different from the Background Remover?

The Background Remover cuts the subject out and drops the background entirely. This tool keeps the background, just blurred, for a natural-looking portrait instead of a hard cutout.

What are the quality tiers?

Fast uses RMBG-1.4, which is quick and a small download. Best uses BiRefNet Lite, an MIT-licensed state-of-the-art matting model with crisper subject edges around hair and fine detail, in exchange for a larger one-time download.

Any tips for the best result?

Use a photo with one clear subject against a distinct background. Increase the blur strength for a stronger bokeh effect, and nudge the feather up if the subject edge looks too hard or too soft against the blur.
