Topsoil Calculator
This calculator turns a garden bed's footprint and target depth into the topsoil you need to buy. Enter length and width in feet plus depth in inches, and it returns cubic feet, cubic yards, whole bags, and an approximate weight so you can pick between bags and a bulk delivery. It uses 0.75 cubic foot bags and a weight of 1.08 US tons per cubic yard.
How to calculate topsoil
- Enter the bed length in feet in the first field.
- Enter the bed width in feet in the second field.
- Enter how deep you want the topsoil in inches (the depth field steps in half inches).
- Read the cubic yards and cubic feet the tool computes from area times depth.
- Check the bag count (0.75 cu ft each) and the approximate weight in tons.
- Click Copy estimate to save the figures for a quote or order.
Examples
A 20 by 10 ft bed, 6 inches deep
Length 20 ft, width 10 ft, depth 6 in
100 cubic feet, 3.7 cubic yards, 134 bags, about 4 tons
A 8 by 4 ft raised bed, 10 inches deep
Length 8 ft, width 4 ft, depth 10 in
26.67 cubic feet, 0.99 cubic yards, 36 bags, about 1.07 tons
A 40 by 3 ft border, 4 inches deep
Length 40 ft, width 3 ft, depth 4 in
40 cubic feet, 1.48 cubic yards, 54 bags, about 1.6 tons
Frequently asked questions
How much topsoil do I need?
Multiply the bed area in square feet by the depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 20 by 10 foot bed at 6 inches deep works out to 100 cubic feet, which is about 3.7 cubic yards.
How does the tool convert depth in inches to a volume?
It divides the depth by 12 to turn inches into feet, then multiplies by the area. So 6 inches becomes 0.5 feet, and a 200 square foot bed at that depth holds 100 cubic feet of soil.
How many bags of topsoil are in a cubic yard?
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it equals 36 of the common 0.75 cubic foot bags. The bag count here always rounds up to a whole bag, since you cannot buy part of one.
Why does the bag count round up?
Bags are sold whole, so any leftover fraction of a bag becomes one more bag. The tool guards against floating point drift, so a volume that divides evenly (like 75 cubic feet into exactly 100 bags) does not spill into an extra bag.
How much does topsoil weigh?
This tool figures roughly 2160 pounds, or about 1.08 US tons, per cubic yard. Real topsoil ranges from about 1800 to 2500 pounds per cubic yard depending on moisture and organic content, so treat the weight as a planning estimate.
How deep should topsoil be?
New lawns and flower beds usually want 4 to 6 inches, while raised vegetable beds often want 8 to 12 inches. Set the depth field to match your project, since depth drives the volume more than most people expect.
Should I order a little extra?
Yes. Soil settles once watered and beds are rarely perfectly level, so ordering around 5 to 10 percent more than the exact figure helps you avoid a second trip or delivery.
Does the calculator handle round or irregular beds?
It assumes a rectangle (length times width). For a circle, estimate the area separately (pi times radius squared) and pad the depth into an equivalent rectangle, or split an L shape into rectangles and add the results.
Is my project data private?
Yes. The math runs entirely in your browser, so the dimensions you type are never uploaded or stored on a server.
