Gravel Calculator: Volume, Weight and Tons

Most gravel and crushed stone falls between about 95 and 105 pounds per cubic foot, so 100 is a safe default. Wet, dense or angular aggregate weighs a little more, and a light decorative stone can weigh less, so change the density field if your supplier lists an exact figure.

Walkways and garden paths usually use 2 to 3 inches. Driveways generally need at least 4 inches, often built up in layers over a compacted base so vehicle weight does not create ruts. Deeper layers mean more tons, so try a couple of depths in the tool to compare.

Both are common. Bulk yards often price loose aggregate by the ton, while some suppliers quote by the cubic yard. The calculator reports cubic yards and tons together so you can place an order either way without converting by hand.

US short tons. The tool divides the total pounds by 2000 to get tons. If your supplier works in metric tonnes, divide the pound figure by 2204.62 instead, or read the pounds value directly and convert.

Yes. The estimate assumes a level, exactly filled rectangle. Add roughly 5 to 10 percent for compaction, spillage and uneven ground, and round up to the supplier's minimum load so a small shortfall does not force a second delivery.

Break the space into rectangles, run each one through the calculator, and add the tons together. For a rough circle, multiply the radius by itself, then by 3.14, and enter that square footage as length times width of one foot each is not needed, just treat the product as your area.

Dimensions of zero are allowed and simply return zero volume. Negative length, width or depth, or a density of zero or less, are rejected and the tool shows a short prompt to enter non-negative dimensions and a positive density.

No. It sizes a single layer at the depth you enter. If your project has a separate crushed base under a finer top course, calculate each layer on its own with its own depth and density, then order the two amounts separately.
