Gravel Calculator: Volume, Weight and Tons
Estimate gravel or crushed stone for a driveway, path or pad. Enter the area and depth and a density to see cubic feet, cubic yards, pounds and tons.
How to estimate gravel
- Enter the area length and width in feet.
- Enter the depth in inches and the gravel density if you know it.
- Read off the cubic feet, cubic yards, pounds and tons to order.
Examples
10 by 10 ft area at 6 inches, 100 lb per cu ft
L 10, W 10, depth 6 in, density 100
50 cu ft, 1.85 cu yd, 5000 lb, 2.5 tons
Frequently asked questions
How much does gravel weigh per cubic foot?
Most gravel and crushed stone weighs about 95 to 105 pounds per cubic foot, so 100 is a sound default. Wet or dense aggregate weighs more, so adjust if you know your material.
How deep should a gravel layer be?
Paths often use 2 to 3 inches. Driveways usually need 4 inches or more, sometimes in layers over a compacted base, to carry vehicle weight without rutting.
Is gravel sold by the ton or the cubic yard?
Both. Bulk suppliers often price by the ton, while some sell by the cubic yard. This calculator gives you cubic yards and tons so you can order either way.
Are these US (short) tons?
Yes. Tons are computed as pounds divided by 2000, the US short ton. If your supplier uses metric tonnes, divide pounds by 2204.62 instead.
Should I order a little extra?
Yes. Add roughly 5 to 10 percent for compaction and uneven ground, and round your order up to the supplier's minimum load to avoid a second delivery.
