Sod Calculator: Rolls and Pallets of Sod

Work out how much sod a lawn needs. Enter the area length and width in feet, then set the coverage per roll and rolls per pallet to get rolls, pallets and square yards.

How to estimate sod for a lawn

  1. Enter the length and width of the area in feet.
  2. Set the coverage per roll, rolls per pallet and a small waste allowance.
  3. Read off the square yards, rolls and pallets to order.

Examples

50 by 30 ft lawn, 10 sq ft rolls, 5% waste

L 50, W 30, roll 10 sq ft, 50 rolls per pallet, 5% waste
1500 sq ft, 167 sq yd, 158 rolls, 4 pallets

Frequently asked questions

How big is a roll of sod?

A common roll covers about 10 square feet, often sold as a 2 by 5 foot piece. Slab sizes vary by grower, so check your supplier and set the coverage field to match for an accurate count.

How many rolls are on a pallet of sod?

Most pallets hold enough sod to cover 400 to 500 square feet, which is roughly 50 of the 10 square foot rolls. The default is 50 rolls per pallet, adjustable for your supplier.

Why is sod measured in square yards?

Sod is often priced by the square yard, which is 9 square feet. The calculator shows square yards alongside rolls and pallets so you can compare quotes no matter how a grower sells it.

How much waste should I add for sod?

About 5 percent covers trimming around curves, beds and edges. Lawns with many islands, paths or tree rings cut more, so raise the allowance for an irregular shape.

Should I measure odd shapes in pieces?

Yes. Split a complex yard into rectangles, find each area, and add them together for the total square footage. Then divide by roll coverage as this tool does to get the roll count.
