Flooring Calculator: Boxes and Cost

Plan a flooring purchase without overspending. Enter the room size and the coverage per box, add a waste allowance for cuts, and see the boxes and cost.

How to estimate flooring boxes

  1. Enter the room length and width in feet.
  2. Enter the square footage each box covers and a waste percent for cuts.
  3. Read off the area, boxes to buy and total cost if you add a price.

Examples

12 by 15 ft room, 20 sq ft per box, 10 percent waste

L 12, W 15, box 20 sq ft, waste 10%, price 45
180 sq ft, 198 with waste, 10 boxes, 450 total

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I add for flooring?

Plan about 10 percent for straight, simple rooms. Add 15 percent for diagonal layouts, busy patterns or rooms with many corners, since cuts create offcuts you cannot reuse.

Why round up to whole boxes?

Flooring is sold by the box, not the plank, so the calculator always rounds up. The leftover also gives you spares for future repairs and replacements.

Does box coverage already include waste?

No. Box coverage is the usable square footage in a sealed box. The waste percent is added on top to cover trimming, defects and pattern matching.

How do I find a room's square footage?

Multiply the length by the width in feet. For L-shaped rooms, split the space into rectangles, find each area, then add them together before entering the total.

Should I buy extra for repairs?

Yes. Keeping one spare box is wise because dye lots change between production runs, and an exact future match can be hard or impossible to source.
