This calculator turns the three dimensions of a woodpile into cords so you can check a delivery or plan a season's supply. Enter the stack length, height and depth in feet, and it multiplies them for the volume in cubic feet, then divides by 128 (the cubic feet in a full cord). It reports full cords only, since face cords depend on log length and are not standardized.

How to measure a cord of firewood

  1. Stack the wood tightly with the rows aligned so the air gaps are as small as possible.
  2. Measure the stack length, height and depth in feet.
  3. Enter the length in the 'Stack length' field (the field steps in half-foot increments).
  4. Enter the 'Stack height' and 'Stack depth' the same way.
  5. Read the stack volume in cubic feet and the number of cords in the result boxes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cord of wood?

A full cord is 128 cubic feet of tightly stacked wood, the volume of a neat pile 4 feet high, 4 feet deep and 8 feet long. It is the legal standard unit for buying firewood in most of the United States.

How do I measure a stack of firewood?

Stack the wood as tightly as you can, then measure the length, height and depth in feet. Multiply the three together for cubic feet, then divide by 128 for cords. This tool does the arithmetic for you.

What units does the calculator use?

All three inputs are in feet, and each field steps in half-foot increments. If you have inches, divide by 12 first, so a 16 inch log depth becomes about 1.33 feet.

What is a face cord and why is it not shown?

A face cord is 4 feet high and 8 feet long but only as deep as the log length, so a 16 inch face cord is about a third of a full cord while a 24 inch one is half. Because depth is not standardized, this tool reports full cords only.

Why does my delivered pile look smaller than a cord?

Loosely thrown wood traps a lot of air, so a truck load measures larger dumped than it does stacked. Always stack the wood before measuring to get an honest cord count.

Does wood species change the cord size?

No. A cord is a measure of stacked volume, not weight, so it is the same 128 cubic feet for oak, pine or any species. Denser woods simply weigh more and give off more heat per cord.

Can I measure a round or irregular pile?

This tool assumes a roughly rectangular stack, so it multiplies length by height by depth. For a cone or dome shaped pile the box formula overstates the volume, so restack it into a rectangle for an accurate reading.

How accurate is the estimate?

The volume is exact for the box you measure, so accuracy comes down to how tightly and evenly you stack. Crooked splits and bark leave gaps that count as wood volume, so a neat stack gives the fairest count.

Is my data kept private?

Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to a server, so your measurements stay on your device.
