Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between stride and step length?

A step is one foot to the other. A stride is two steps, the full cycle from one foot landing to the same foot landing again, so stride is double the step.

How is stride length estimated from height?

Walking stride is about 0.413 of height for women and 0.415 for men. Running stride is longer, about 0.65 of height.

How many steps are in a mile?

It depends on your stride. A 70-inch male walking takes roughly 4,362 steps per mile, while taller people or runners take fewer.

Why is the running stride longer?

Runners push off harder and spend time airborne, so each stride covers more ground than a walking stride for the same person.

Can I measure my stride more precisely?

Yes. Walk or run a known distance, count your steps, then divide the distance by the steps for your real step length.
