Frequently asked questions

How is total seed calculated?

Total seed equals the field size in acres times your seeding rate in pounds per acre. For example, 40 acres at 30 pounds per acre needs 1200 pounds of seed.

What seeding rate should I use?

Rates vary widely by crop, variety, row spacing and field conditions. This tool is a planning aid, so use the rate from your seed tag or local extension guidance for your specific crop.

Should I add seed for germination or losses?

Seed tags state a target rate that often already accounts for typical germination. If you want a safety margin for poor stands, raise your rate before entering it here.

How does the cost estimate work?

If you enter a price per pound, the cost is simply the total pounds times that price. Leave the price blank to see pounds only.

Does this handle metric units?

The tool uses acres and pounds. Convert kilograms per hectare to pounds per acre first if you work in metric, since the math itself is unit agnostic.
