Seeding Rate Calculator
Estimate the total seed a field needs before you buy or fill the drill. Enter the area in acres and your target rate in pounds per acre to get total pounds, and add a price per pound to see the seed cost too. Both results are rounded to two decimals, and the cost stays blank until you enter a price.
How to estimate total seed
- Enter the Field size in acres.
- Enter your target Seeding rate in pounds per acre.
- Optionally enter the Seed price per pound to add a cost estimate.
- Read the Total seed in pounds and the Total cost boxes.
- Press Copy estimate to grab both figures as text.
Examples
40 acres at 30 lb per acre with price
Field size 40 acres, rate 30 lb/acre, price $2.50/lb
Total seed 1200 lb, total cost $3000
Small plot with a cheaper seed
Field size 12.5 acres, rate 22 lb/acre, price $1.80/lb
Total seed 275 lb, total cost $495
Pounds only, no price entered
Field size 80 acres, rate 18 lb/acre, price blank

Frequently asked questions
How is total seed calculated?
Total seed equals the field size in acres times your seeding rate in pounds per acre, rounded to two decimals. For example, 40 acres at 30 pounds per acre needs 1200 pounds of seed.
What seeding rate should I use?
Rates vary widely by crop, variety, row spacing, and field conditions. This tool is a planning aid, so use the rate from your seed tag or local extension guidance for the crop and stand you are targeting.
Should I add seed for germination or losses?
Seed tags often state a rate that already assumes typical germination. If you want a cushion for a rough seedbed or poor stand, raise your rate before you enter it here rather than expecting the tool to pad it.
How does the cost estimate work?
If you enter a price per pound, the cost is the total pounds times that price, rounded to two decimals. Leave the price field blank and the cost box shows a dash, so you see pounds only.
Does this handle metric units like kg per hectare?
The tool works in acres and pounds. If you plan in kilograms per hectare, convert to pounds per acre first, since 1 kg per hectare is about 0.892 pounds per acre. The arithmetic itself is unit agnostic.
Can I plan by seeds per acre instead of pounds?
Not directly. This tool uses a weight rate. To convert a seeds per acre target to pounds, divide it by the seeds per pound printed on the tag, then enter that pound figure as your rate.
What does pure live seed change?
Pure live seed accounts for purity and germination below 100 percent, common in forages and cover crops. If your tag lists PLS, bump the bulk rate up so the live seed lands at your target, then enter that higher bulk rate here.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser with simple multiplication, so your acreage, rates, and prices never leave your device and nothing is saved.
Does it round or hold decimals?
It rounds both the total pounds and the total cost to two decimal places. Whole numbers show without trailing zeros, so 1200 pounds displays as 1200 rather than 1200.00.
