How to estimate herd water

  1. Enter the number of animals.
  2. Pick an animal type, or enter your own gallons per head per day.
  3. Set the number of days to total over.
  4. Read off the daily and total gallons.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does a cow drink per day?

This tool uses about 12 gallons per day for beef cattle and 30 for lactating dairy cattle as planning figures. Actual intake rises with heat, lactation, dry feed and body size.

Which animals are built in?

Typical rates are included for beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, sheep, goats, pigs and chickens. For anything else, enter your own gallons per head per day.

Do these rates account for hot weather?

No. The defaults are mild-weather planning estimates. Water intake can roughly double in heat, so size troughs and storage with a generous margin.

How is the total calculated?

Daily use is the head count times the per-head rate. The total multiplies daily use by the number of days, which is handy for sizing storage or hauling.

Are these figures a substitute for a vet or nutritionist?

No. They are general planning aids only. For precise needs, follow guidance from your veterinarian, nutritionist or local extension service.
