Frequently asked questions
How much hay does a horse eat per day?
A common rule is about 1.5 to 2 percent of body weight in dry forage, so roughly 20 pounds a day for a 1000 pound horse. Use the ration your animals actually need.
How much does a bale of hay weigh?
Small square bales often run 40 to 60 pounds, while large round bales range from several hundred to over 1000 pounds. Weigh a sample bale and enter that figure for accuracy.
Why are bales rounded up?
Hay is bought by the whole bale, so any partial need rounds up. Extra hay also covers waste, since animals trample and refuse some of what is fed.
Should I add hay for waste?
Yes, often. Feeding waste can be 10 to 20 percent or more without feeders. This tool counts the ration only, so add a margin or use feeders to cut losses.
Is this a feeding recommendation?
No. It is a planning estimate. For diets and health, follow your veterinarian, nutritionist or local extension service for your specific animals.
