Frequently asked questions

How much feed does a chicken eat per day?

A standard laying hen eats roughly a quarter pound, about 4 ounces, of feed a day. Bantams eat less and large meat birds more, so adjust the ounces for your flock.

How many pounds is the daily ounces?

There are 16 ounces in a pound, so 4 ounces a day is a quarter pound. The tool converts your total ounces to pounds and then to whole bags for ordering.

Does feed use change with the seasons?

Yes. Birds eat more in cold weather and during heavy lay, and less in heat. These are mild-weather planning figures, so add a margin for winter.

Why round bags up?

Feed is sold by the whole bag, so any partial need rounds up. Set the bag size to 0 if you only want total ounces and pounds without a bag count.

Does this include treats or forage?

No. It counts complete feed only. Free-range foraging, scratch and kitchen scraps reduce feed use, but should stay a small share of a balanced diet.
