Social Media Character Counter
Write posts that fit the first time. Paste your draft, choose a platform and field, and the counter shows how many characters you have used against the limit, how many remain, and how many posts a long thread would need. It counts by Unicode code point, so a single emoji counts as one, and it recalculates the moment you type.
How to count social media characters
- Choose the platform and field from the Platform and field dropdown, such as an X post or Instagram bio.
- Type or paste your draft into the Your post box.
- Watch the live counter show characters used out of the limit at the top.
- Read the characters remaining line, or how many you are over when the box turns red.
- Check the Posts needed card to see how many posts a long thread would take.
Examples
Comfortably within the X limit
"Hello from Boneyard Tools!" on X post (280)
26 / 280, 254 characters remaining, 1 post
Emoji count as one character each
"Big news today ππ" on X post (280)
17 characters, 263 remaining, 1 post
A long draft that spills into a thread
A 600-character draft on X post (280)
320 over the limit, needs 3 posts
Frequently asked questions
Which platforms and limits are covered?
X posts (280) and Premium (25,000), Instagram captions (2,200) and bios (150), Facebook posts (63,206), LinkedIn posts (3,000) and headlines (220), TikTok captions (2,200), YouTube titles (100) and descriptions (5,000), Bluesky (300), Threads (500), Pinterest descriptions (500), and Mastodon toots (500).
How are emoji counted?
By Unicode code point, so a single emoji counts as one character even though it uses two UTF-16 units internally. This matches how X and most platforms count. Emoji built from several joined code points, such as some flags or skin-tone variants, can count as more than one.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes. Every space, tab, and line break is a character in the count, because each is a code point in your text. Trimming stray blank lines is an easy way to claw back room near a limit.
How is the Posts needed number worked out?
When your text is over the limit, the tool divides the character count by the limit and rounds up. A 600-character draft against a 280 limit needs 3 posts. Empty text needs 0 posts.
How are links counted?
This counter counts every character of a URL. Note that X shortens links to a fixed length in the app, so a long link may take fewer characters there than shown here. Treat the count as a safe upper bound.
Why does my count differ from the app sometimes?
Platforms occasionally change limits and some weight certain character ranges differently, for example counting many CJK characters as two. This tool uses a simple, predictable per-code-point count, so confirm in the app when you are right at the edge.
Can I switch fields, like caption versus bio?
Yes. The Platform and field dropdown lists specific fields, so an Instagram caption (2,200) and an Instagram bio (150) each get their own limit rather than one generic number per app.
Is my text private?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged, or stored on a server.
Is there a length limit on what I can paste?
No fixed cap. The count is computed locally, so the practical ceiling is your device memory, and even long drafts update instantly as you edit.
