Brix to Specific Gravity Calculator

Convert a refractometer Brix reading into hydrometer specific gravity, or run it the other way, without doing the algebra by hand. How to convert Brix and specific gravity

  1. Open the 'I have a' menu and choose 'Refractometer (Brix)' or 'Hydrometer (gravity)'.
  2. Type your measurement into the Reading field; the step matches the scale, 0.1 for Brix and 0.001 for gravity.
  3. Read the converted number in the opposite scale, shown in the highlighted result card.

Frequently asked questions

How does it convert Brix to specific gravity?

It applies the standard refractometer formula SG = 1 + Brix / (258.6 - (Brix / 258.2) x 227.1). A reading of 12 Brix returns a specific gravity of about 1.0484 by this equation, which is the same relation printed in most brewing references.

How is gravity converted back to Brix?

It uses the widely adopted cubic fit Brix = ((182.4601 x SG - 775.6821) x SG + 1262.7794) x SG - 669.5622. Feeding in 1.050 yields roughly 12.39 Brix. This polynomial is the same inverse used inside popular brewing software.

Why are the results shown to so many decimals?

The calculator keeps full precision and only trims tiny floating-point noise, so you may see values like 1.048378242. For practical brewing, round gravity to three decimals and Brix to one, since your instruments are nowhere near that precise.

Does this correct a refractometer reading after fermentation?

No. Once alcohol is present it bends light differently and a plain refractometer reads high. This tool converts unfermented wort or must only. To track a fermenting or finished beer, use a dedicated refractometer final-gravity correction that also accounts for the original gravity.

Why can I only enter one value?

Brix and specific gravity are two scales describing the same sample, so one determines the other. The tool asks for a single reading and computes its partner. Supplying both would let them disagree, so the engine only accepts one at a time.

What input ranges are allowed?

Brix must fall between 0 and 100, and specific gravity must be a plausible brewing value between 0.9 and 1.2. Readings outside those bounds are rejected with a message, since they usually signal a typo or a mis-set instrument.

Do I need to correct for temperature?

This converter does not adjust for temperature. Hydrometers are calibrated to a specific temperature, often 20 C or 60 F, and read off when your sample is warmer or cooler. Take your reading at the calibration temperature or apply a separate temperature correction before converting.

Should I trust Brix or the hydrometer more?

For unfermented wort both agree closely, and a refractometer wins on convenience because it needs only a few drops and reads instantly. A hydrometer needs a full sample cylinder but stays accurate once alcohol appears, which is why many brewers use the refractometer before pitching and the hydrometer afterward.
