Brix to Specific Gravity Calculator
Convert refractometer Brix readings to specific gravity and back. Enter exactly one value and the calculator returns the matching reading instantly.
How to convert Brix and specific gravity
- Pick whether you are entering Brix or specific gravity.
- Type the reading from your refractometer or hydrometer.
- Read the converted value in the other scale below.
Examples
Refractometer to hydrometer
12 Brix
Specific gravity 1.048
Hydrometer to refractometer
SG 1.050
12.39 Brix
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert Brix to specific gravity?
This tool uses SG = 1 + Brix / (258.6 - (Brix / 258.2) x 227.1), a standard refractometer conversion used widely in brewing.
How is gravity converted back to Brix?
It applies the cubic fit Brix = ((182.4601 x SG - 775.6821) x SG + 1262.7794) x SG - 669.5622, the inverse used in brewing software.
Does this correct for alcohol after fermentation?
No. Once alcohol is present a refractometer reads high. This converts unfermented wort readings; use a finished-beer correction tool afterward.
Why must I enter only one value?
The two scales describe the same sample, so you supply one and the tool computes the other. Entering both is rejected to avoid conflicts.
What ranges are accepted?
Brix must be between 0 and 100, and specific gravity must be a plausible brewing reading between 0.9 and 1.2.
