Frequently asked questions
How is mash efficiency calculated?
Efficiency = actual points / potential points x 100. Actual points are (OG - 1) x 1000 x gallons, and potential points are grain pounds x PPG.
What is a gravity point?
A gravity point is the part of specific gravity after the decimal x 1000. A gravity of 1.050 is 50 points, and points scale with batch volume.
What PPG should I use?
Base malts yield about 37 points per pound per gallon, the default here. Adjust the PPG for a different grain bill or a weighted average.
What is a good efficiency?
Many home systems land near 65 to 75 percent. Finer crush, a longer mash and good sparging push it higher; channeling drags it lower.
Is this mash or brewhouse efficiency?
It depends on where you measure gravity and volume. Use pre-boil numbers for mash efficiency, or into-fermenter numbers for brewhouse efficiency.
