How to calculate mash efficiency

  1. Enter your measured Original gravity, such as 1.050.
  2. Enter the Batch volume in gallons at the point you took the reading.
  3. Enter the total Grain weight in pounds for the whole grain bill.
  4. Set the Grain yield in PPG, or leave it at the default 37 for base malt.
  5. Read the Efficiency percentage plus the Actual points and Potential points tiles, then Copy the result.

Frequently asked questions

How is mash efficiency calculated?

Efficiency = actual points / potential points x 100. Actual points are (OG - 1) x 1000 x gallons, and potential points are grain pounds x PPG. So 1.050 in 5 gallons is 250 actual points, and 10 lb at 37 PPG is 370 potential, giving about 67.6 percent.

What units does the calculator use?

Batch volume is in US gallons, grain weight is in pounds, and gravity is a specific gravity like 1.050. PPG is points per pound per gallon. If you brew in litres and kilograms, convert to these units first or the points math will not line up.

What is a gravity point?

A gravity point is the part of specific gravity after the decimal times 1000, then scaled by volume. A gravity of 1.050 is 50 points per gallon, so five gallons at 1.050 hold 250 total points of dissolved sugar.

What PPG should I use?

Base malts yield about 37 points per pound per gallon, the default here. Wheat and some pale malts run a touch higher, crystal and specialty malts lower. For a mixed grain bill, enter a weighted average PPG across all the grains.

What counts as good efficiency?

Many home systems land near 65 to 75 percent. A finer crush, a full mill gap check, a longer mash and an even sparge push it higher, while channeling, a thick mash or a hurried lauter drag it lower.

Is this mash or brewhouse efficiency?

It depends on where you measure. Use pre-boil gravity and volume for mash or conversion efficiency, or use the into-fermenter gravity and volume for brewhouse efficiency, which is lower because it includes kettle and trub losses.

Can efficiency go above 100 percent?

The formula can print a figure over 100 if your gravity or volume reading is too high or your PPG is set too low. In practice that signals a measurement or PPG error rather than pulling more sugar than the grain contains.
