Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes an average adult silent reading speed of 238 words per minute, then converts the total word count into seconds.

How are sentences counted?

Sentences are counted by the number of terminating marks, namely periods, question marks and exclamation marks. Runs of these marks count as one sentence.

What counts as a paragraph?

Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines, so a single hard line break inside a block does not start a new paragraph.

Are accented and non-Latin words counted correctly?

Yes. Word detection is Unicode-aware, so accented letters and non-Latin scripts are counted as part of words rather than split apart.

Is my text private?

Yes. All statistics are computed in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
