Frequently asked questions

What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?

Scores of 60 to 70 are considered standard and readable for most adults. Above 80 is easy, while below 30 is very confusing and best for graduates.

How is the score calculated?

The formula is 206.835 minus 1.015 times words per sentence minus 84.6 times syllables per word. Shorter sentences and shorter words raise the score.

How are syllables counted?

Each word is lowercased, then groups of consecutive vowels (a, e, i, o, u, y) are counted. A silent trailing e is dropped, and every word counts as at least one syllable.

Is the syllable count always exact?

No. It is a fast heuristic estimate. English spelling is irregular, so unusual words may be off by one, which slightly shifts the score.

Is my text private?

Yes. The score is computed in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
