Frequently asked questions

How is batting average calculated?

Batting average is hits divided by at bats. For example, 150 hits in 500 at bats is 150 / 500 = 0.300, written as .300. It is always a value between .000 and 1.000.

Why is the result shown without a leading zero?

Baseball convention drops the leading zero, so 0.300 is written .300 and read aloud as three hundred. This tool follows that convention and rounds to three decimal places.

What counts as an at bat?

An at bat is a plate appearance that ends in a hit, an out or a reached-on-error, excluding walks, hit by pitch, sacrifices and catcher interference. Use official at bats, not total plate appearances.

What is considered a good batting average?

In modern Major League Baseball a .300 average is excellent, around .250 to .270 is roughly league average and below .200 is poor, often called the Mendoza line.

Can hits ever be more than at bats?

No. Every hit is also an at bat, so hits can never exceed at bats. If you enter more hits than at bats the calculator reports an error.
