Frequently asked questions
How much water should a dog drink per day?
A common guideline is about 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day, so a 30 lb dog needs roughly 30 oz. This tool uses that rule and also shows the amount in milliliters and 8 oz cups.
Does food type change water needs?
Yes. Dogs on dry kibble usually drink more than those on wet or raw food, which already contains a lot of water. Heat, exercise, age, pregnancy and some health conditions also raise needs, so treat the number as a baseline.
What are signs my dog is dehydrated?
Lethargy, dry or tacky gums, loss of skin elasticity, sunken eyes and panting can signal dehydration. Gently pinch the skin over the shoulders, and if it is slow to spring back, contact your veterinarian.
Is it bad if my dog drinks a lot more or less?
A sudden, lasting change in drinking can point to a problem such as kidney disease, diabetes or infection. If your dog drinks far more or far less than usual for more than a day or two, consult your veterinarian.
Can a dog drink too much water?
Rarely, but gulping large amounts quickly, often during hard play or swimming, can cause water intoxication. Offer water in steady amounts, take breaks during heavy exercise, and watch for bloating or wobbliness.
