It uses a 3x3 convolution that scales each pixel up and subtracts a fraction of its four orthogonal neighbors, increasing local contrast at edges. Flat areas where neighbors match the center are left unchanged, so the look is crisp rather than noisy.

Subtle is 20, Medium is 45, and Strong is 75 on the 0 to 100 Amount scale. Amount 0 is an exact no-op, and higher values push the sharpening strength further, up to the tool's maximum at 100.

Sharpening enhances detail that is already present by amplifying edges. It cannot invent detail that motion blur or heavy out-of-focus blur erased, so very blurry shots improve only so much.

High amounts exaggerate edges into bright and dark halos and amplify any noise or JPEG artifacts. Back the Amount off until edges look defined but the halos and grain are not obvious.

Yes. The preview uses the exact same pixel math as the export, just on a copy scaled to fit about 1000 pixels on its longest edge for speed. The downloaded file is sharpened at full resolution.

The alpha channel is never touched, so transparency is preserved exactly. Only the red, green, and blue channels are sharpened, which keeps edges of a cut-out clean.
