Work Hours Calculator
Work out how long a shift lasts down to the minute. Enter your clock-in and clock-out times in 24-hour format and an optional unpaid break, and the calculator returns the worked time two ways: as decimal hours for payroll and as a tidy hours and minutes label. It also handles shifts that cross midnight, so a night shift is counted correctly.
How to calculate hours worked
- Set the Clock in time using the time picker, entered as 24-hour HH:MM.
- Set the Clock out time the same way; a time at or before the clock-in counts as overnight.
- Enter any unpaid break in the Break (minutes) field, which steps in fives and defaults to 30.
- Read the Hours worked headline as decimal hours, with the hours and minutes label below it.
- Click Copy result to grab a one-line summary of the shift for a timesheet.
Examples
Day shift with a lunch break
Clock in 09:00, clock out 17:30, break 30 minutes
8 hours (8h 0m), 480 minutes worked
Overnight shift, no break
Clock in 23:00, clock out 07:00, break 0 minutes
8 hours (8h 0m), 480 minutes worked
Part shift with a fractional result
Clock in 08:15, clock out 16:45, break 45 minutes
7.75 hours (7h 45m), 465 minutes worked
Frequently asked questions
How is the worked time calculated?
The calculator finds the minutes between clock-out and clock-in, subtracts the unpaid break, then reports the remainder as decimal hours, as an hours and minutes label, and as a raw minute total.
Does it handle overnight or night shifts?
Yes. If the clock-out is the same as or earlier than the clock-in, the shift is treated as crossing midnight and 24 hours are added, so 23:00 to 07:00 comes out as 8 hours.
Why does it show 7.83 instead of 7 hours 50 minutes?
Decimal hours suit payroll and invoicing because you multiply them straight by a rate. A 470 minute shift is 7.83 decimal hours, rounded to two places, and is also shown as 7h 50m so both formats are on screen.
What time format should I use?
Times use 24-hour HH:MM, so 9 in the morning is 09:00 and half past five in the afternoon is 17:30. The break is entered separately as a whole number of minutes.
What happens if the break is longer than the shift?
The calculator will not return a negative result. If the break exceeds the elapsed time, it shows an error asking you to check the break, since worked time cannot fall below zero.
How do I enter more than one break?
Add the breaks together and enter the combined minutes. If you took a 30 minute lunch and two 10 minute breaks, enter 50, since the tool subtracts a single unpaid total.
Does it calculate overtime or pay?
No. It reports the hours worked for one shift only. It does not apply overtime multipliers, weekly thresholds or pay rates, so pair the decimal hours with your own rate for wages.
Are seconds supported?
No. Times are minute precise using HH:MM, and results are given in whole minutes, decimal hours to two places, and an hours and minutes label. Seconds are not tracked.
Is my data private?
Yes. The whole calculation runs in your browser from the times you enter. Nothing is sent to a server, logged or stored, so your shift details never leave your device.
