Frequently asked questions

What is the last frost date?

It is the average date of the last spring frost for your area, after which freezing nights are unlikely. Local extension services and frost maps publish it by zip or postal code.

How many weeks before frost should I start seeds?

It depends on the crop. The seed packet usually states it, for example six to eight weeks for tomatoes and peppers, or two to four weeks for many leafy greens.

Why transplant after the frost date?

Tender plants can be damaged by a late frost, so warm-season crops go out one to two weeks after the last frost once nights stay mild and the soil has warmed.

Does this account for my time zone?

Dates are treated as plain calendar dates in UTC, so the result is the same wherever you are. Frost dates are local averages, so treat them as a guide.

Can I direct sow instead?

Yes. Some crops dislike transplanting and do better sown straight into the garden. For those, use the weeks-after-frost date as your outdoor sowing date.
