Roofing Squares and Shingle Bundle Calculator

Turn a roof area into roofing squares and shingle bundles. Enter the roof area in square feet measured along the slope, set the waste allowance and the bundles per square.

How to figure roofing squares and bundles

  1. Enter the roof area in square feet, measured along the slope.
  2. Set a waste percentage for cuts, hips, valleys and starter course.
  3. Set the bundles per square, then read off squares and bundles to buy.

Examples

2000 sq ft roof, 10% waste, 3 bundles per square

Area 2000 sq ft, 10% waste, 3 bundles per square
20 squares, 22 with waste, 66 bundles

Frequently asked questions

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingles, underlayment and labor are commonly priced per square, so converting your roof area into squares makes ordering and quoting easier.

How many shingle bundles are in a square?

Most architectural shingles take three bundles to cover one square. Some heavier or specialty shingles need four or five bundles, so check the wrapper and set the bundles per square to match.

Do I use the roof area or the floor area?

Use the roof area measured along the slope, which is larger than the building footprint. A steeper pitch adds more surface, so a sloped measurement or a pitch multiplier gives the right number of squares.

How much waste should I add for roofing?

Around 10 percent suits a simple gable roof. Roofs with many hips, valleys, dormers or a steep pitch waste more, so 15 percent or higher is common on a cut-up roof.

Does this include ridge cap or starter strip?

No. This counts field shingle bundles only. Ridge cap, starter strip, underlayment, drip edge and flashing are ordered separately based on the ridge, hip, eave and rake lengths of your roof.
