Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In US restaurants 15 to 20 percent of the bill is typical, with 20 percent common for good service. Counter service, delivery and other countries vary widely, so use the percentage that fits your situation.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Custom is to tip on the pre-tax bill, since the tax is not part of the service. Many people tip on the after-tax total for simplicity. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer and the math works the same.

How does splitting the bill work?

The calculator adds the tip to the bill, then divides the total by the number of people. It also shows each person's share of just the tip, so the table can settle up evenly.

How is rounding handled?

Every money figure is rounded to two decimal places. Because of rounding, the per-person shares may add up to a cent or two off the total on awkward splits.

Is my bill data saved anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or stored.
