How to use the tip calculator

Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In US restaurants 15 to 20 percent of the bill is typical, with 20 percent common for good sit-down service. Counter service, delivery, taxis and other countries all vary widely, so pick the percentage that fits your situation rather than a single fixed rule.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Custom is to tip on the pre-tax bill, since sales tax is not part of the service. Many people tip on the after-tax total for simplicity. Enter whichever figure you prefer in the Bill amount field and the math is identical either way.
How is the tip actually calculated?
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100, and the total is the bill plus that tip. For a 100 bill at 15 percent the tip is 15.00 and the total is 115.00. Both figures are rounded to the nearest cent.
How does splitting the bill work?
The calculator adds the tip to the bill, then divides the total by the number of people to get each person's share. It also shows each diner's slice of just the tip, so a table can settle the gratuity evenly without extra math.
How is rounding handled?
Every money figure is rounded to two decimal places. Because each share is rounded on its own, the per-person amounts can add up to a cent or two off the total on awkward splits. A 115.00 total across three people shows 38.33 each, which is 114.99 in total, so one person should cover the extra cent.
What are the limits on the on-screen controls?
The sliders cover a bill up to 1,000, a tip up to 50 percent and up to 20 people. You can type a larger bill straight into the number field if you need to, and the number of people is always rounded to a whole number of at least one.
Can I change the currency?
Yes. The menu in the top right switches between US dollars, euros, British pounds and Indian rupees. It only changes the currency symbol and formatting shown, not the arithmetic, which is the same in any currency.
What happens with a zero or empty tip?
A zero percent tip is allowed and simply makes the tip 0.00 and the total equal to the bill. A negative bill, negative tip or fewer than one person is rejected, and the tool shows a short prompt to enter valid values instead of a result.
Is my bill data saved anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or stored, so your dinner numbers never leave your device.
