Gas Trip Cost Calculator

Plan the fuel bill for a road trip. Enter the distance, your vehicle's fuel economy and the price of fuel to see how much fuel you will burn and what it costs.

How to estimate gas cost for a trip

  1. Choose US units (miles, MPG, $/gallon) or metric (km, L/100km, price per litre).
  2. Enter the trip distance, your fuel efficiency and the fuel price.
  3. Toggle round trip if you are driving back, then read the fuel used and total cost.

Examples

300-mile drive at 30 MPG

300 miles, 30 MPG, $3.50 per gallon
10 gallons of fuel costing $35.00

Frequently asked questions

How is the amount of fuel calculated?

In US units the fuel used is distance divided by MPG. In metric it is distance over 100 multiplied by litres per 100 km. Cost is fuel used times the fuel price.

What does the round-trip option do?

It doubles the distance before the calculation, so both the fuel used and the cost reflect driving there and back.

What is L/100km and how does it differ from MPG?

L/100km measures litres burned per 100 kilometres, where lower is better. MPG measures miles driven per gallon, where higher is better. Pick the system that matches your numbers.

Does this include tolls, wear or other costs?

No. It estimates fuel cost only. Add tolls, parking and maintenance separately for a full trip budget.

Is my input private?

Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded.
