In US units the fuel used is the distance divided by MPG, so 300 miles at 30 MPG is 10 gallons. In metric it is the distance over 100 times the litres per 100 km. Cost is fuel used times the price.

US units prefix the cost with a dollar sign. Metric shows the number without a symbol, so you can read it as pounds, euros or any local currency that matches the per litre price you entered.
