Running Pace Converter
Runners and treadmill users constantly switch between pace, the minutes it takes to cover a distance, and speed, the distance covered per hour. Enter any one of the four, minutes per kilometre, minutes per mile, kilometres per hour or miles per hour, and this converter fills in the other three at once. Paces accept the natural minutes and seconds format like 5:00, and every conversion uses the exact 1.609344 kilometres per mile factor.
How to convert running pace
- Open the 'Input is' menu and pick what your number means: pace per km, pace per mile, speed in km/h or speed in mph.
- Type the value into the box, using m:ss like 5:00 for a pace or a plain number like 12 for a speed.
- Read the four cards showing pace per km, pace per mile, and speed in km/h and mph.
- Adjust the value or unit and the results update instantly as you type.
- Press Copy to grab the one-line summary of all four figures.
Examples
A 5:00 per km pace
Input is Pace per km, value 5:00
5:00/km, 8:03/mile, 12.00 km/h, 7.46 mph
A treadmill set to 10 km/h
Input is Speed (km/h), value 10
6:00/km, 9:39/mile, 10.00 km/h, 6.21 mph
An 8:00 per mile pace
Input is Pace per mile, value 8:00
4:58/km, 8:00/mile, 12.07 km/h, 7.50 mph
Frequently asked questions
How do you turn pace into speed?
Speed in km/h is 3600 divided by the seconds per kilometre. A 5:00 per km pace is 300 seconds, so 3600 divided by 300 gives exactly 12 km/h. The mph value is that km/h figure divided by 1.609344.
What mile pace matches 5:00 per km?
Multiply the per-km seconds by 1.609344 to get seconds per mile. So 300 seconds becomes about 482.8 seconds, which rounds to 8:03 per mile. The tool does this conversion automatically alongside the speeds.
How many kilometres are in a mile?
One mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometres, and that is the constant used for every pace and speed conversion here. Using the full precise value rather than a rounded 1.6 keeps mile and kilometre figures consistent across long distances.
Can I enter speed instead of pace?
Yes. Choose km/h or mph as the input unit and type a plain decimal number, and the tool returns the matching pace per km and per mile plus the other speed. This is ideal for reading a treadmill dial and translating it into an outdoor pace.
What pace format is accepted?
For pace units you can type minutes and seconds as m:ss or mm:ss, such as 8:03, and the seconds part must be 00 to 59. A bare number of seconds also works. Results are always shown as minutes and seconds, rounded to the nearest whole second.
Why does a value get rejected?
Pace and speed must be positive, so zero or negative numbers are refused, and a malformed time like 5:75 fails because 75 is not a valid seconds value. Clearing the box simply shows no result rather than an error.
Does rounding ever make the numbers look slightly off?
Slightly, yes. Paces are rounded to the nearest second and speeds are shown to two decimals, so converting a value out and back can shift the last digit. The underlying math keeps full precision; only the display is rounded.
Can I use this for race pacing?
Yes. Convert your goal pace to speed to set a treadmill, or convert a known finish speed to pace to plan splits. For a full finish-time estimate across a race distance, pair it with a distance and time calculator, since this tool converts pace and speed rather than total time.
Is my data private?
Yes. Every conversion runs in your browser with no network calls, so the paces and speeds you enter never leave your device.
