GPS Coordinate Converter

Paste a latitude and longitude in any common notation and get all three formats at once: decimal degrees (DD), degrees minutes seconds (DMS) and degrees decimal minutes (DDM), plus ready map links. Everything runs in your browser.

How to convert GPS coordinates

  1. Paste your coordinates in any format, for example 40.7128, -74.006 or 40 42 46 N, 74 0 21 W.
  2. Read the decimal, DMS and DDM versions side by side and copy the one you need.
  3. Open the location directly in Google Maps or OpenStreetMap from the links.

Examples

DMS to decimal degrees

40°42'46"N 74°00'21.6"W
40.712778, -74.006000

Decimal degrees to DMS

-33.8688, 151.2093
33° 52' 7.7" S, 151° 12' 33.5" E

Frequently asked questions

What coordinate formats can I paste?

Decimal degrees like 40.7128, -74.006; degrees minutes seconds like 40 42 46 N, 74 0 21 W; and degrees decimal minutes like 40 42.768 N, 74 0.36 W. Degree, minute and second symbols, the words deg, min and sec, and N/S/E/W hemisphere letters are all understood.

How do I convert DMS to decimal degrees?

Decimal degrees equal degrees plus minutes divided by 60 plus seconds divided by 3600. For example 40 degrees 42 minutes 46 seconds is 40 + 42/60 + 46/3600, which is about 40.7128. South and West coordinates are negative.

What is the difference between DMS and DDM?

DMS (degrees minutes seconds) splits the fraction of a degree into whole minutes and seconds, like 40 42 46. DDM (degrees decimal minutes) keeps the minutes as a decimal, like 40 42.768, and is common in marine and aviation GPS units.

Do I need to add N, S, E or W?

No. You can use a minus sign for South and West instead, for example -33.8688, 151.2093. If you do use hemisphere letters, the tool assigns latitude and longitude automatically, so the order does not matter.

What are the valid ranges for latitude and longitude?

Latitude runs from -90 to 90 degrees and longitude from -180 to 180 degrees. Anything outside those ranges is rejected as invalid.

Are my coordinates sent to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the coordinates you enter never leave your device.
