Frequently asked questions
What is the rule of thumb for welding amps?
A common stick welding guideline is about 1 amp per 0.001 inch of electrode diameter. So a 1/8 inch (0.125 in) electrode centres near 125 amps. This tool multiplies the diameter in inches by 1000 to get that centre figure. It is a documented rule of thumb, not an exact law.
How wide is the amperage range?
The tool applies plus or minus 25 percent around the centre value, so low is the centre times 0.75 and high is the centre times 1.25. For a 0.125 in electrode that is a window of 93.75 to 156.25 amps around the 125 amp centre.
Which welding process is this for?
It is aimed at stick welding, also called SMAW or manual metal arc, where the number refers to the bare core wire diameter. MIG and TIG set current from wire feed speed or tungsten and material, so this simple diameter rule does not apply to them.
Can I enter metric electrode sizes?
Yes. Switch the unit to millimetres and the tool divides by 25.4 to get inches, then applies the same rule. A 3.2 mm electrode works out close to 1/8 inch and centres near 126 amps.
Why does the result show long decimals?
The math is carried out exactly, so a 3/32 inch electrode gives a low end of 70.3125 amps rather than a rounded value. Your welder dial will not be that precise, so round to the nearest 5 or 10 amps when you set the machine.
Does electrode type change the amps?
Yes. The classification, flux coating, polarity and whether you run AC or DC all shift the usable current for the same diameter. Always check the printed amperage range on the electrode box or the maker data sheet before you rely on the estimate.
How do position and thickness affect the setting?
Run toward the high end for flat fillets and thick plate that pull heat away, and toward the low end for thin sheet or for vertical and overhead work where a hot puddle wants to sag. The range exists to cover exactly these adjustments.
Why is my real machine setting different?
The rule sets a baseline only. Joint fit-up, travel speed, arc length and the look of the bead all matter, so nudge the amps until the arc is stable, the slag lifts cleanly and the weld ties into both edges.
