Welding Amperage Calculator
Enter your stick electrode diameter in inches or millimetres to get a starting amperage and a practical working range. Treat it as a setup baseline, then fine tune on scrap.
How to estimate welding amperage
- Pick a common electrode size or enter a custom diameter.
- Choose inches or millimetres for the diameter.
- Read the centre amperage and the low to high working range.
Examples
1/8 inch electrode
0.125 in diameter
125 A centre (about 94 to 156 A)
3/32 inch electrode
0.09375 in diameter
94 A centre (about 70 to 117 A)
Frequently asked questions
What is the rule of thumb for welding amps?
A common stick welding guideline is about 1 amp per 0.001 inch of electrode diameter. So a 1/8 inch (0.125 in) electrode centres near 125 amps. This is a documented rule of thumb, not an exact law.
How wide is the amperage range?
This tool applies roughly plus or minus 25 percent around the centre value to give a practical window. Run hotter for flat fillets and thick plate, and cooler for thin plate or vertical and overhead work.
Does electrode type change the amps?
Yes. Classification, flux coating, polarity and whether you run AC or DC all shift the usable current. Always check the printed range on the electrode box or the maker data sheet.
Can I enter metric electrode sizes?
Yes. Switch the unit to millimetres and the tool converts using 25.4 mm per inch, then applies the same rule of thumb. A 3.2 mm electrode is about 1/8 inch.
Why is my real machine setting different?
The rule of thumb sets a baseline. Joint fit-up, position, travel speed and the look of the bead all matter, so adjust amps until the arc is stable and the bead ties in cleanly.
