How to calculate filament cost

  1. Slice your model and read the estimated filament weight in grams.
  2. Type that weight into the Filament used field.
  3. Enter what you paid per kilogram of spool into the Spool price field.
  4. Read the total filament cost and the price per gram in the result cards.
  5. Copy the cost line if you want to paste it into a quote or note.

Frequently asked questions

How is filament cost calculated?

Spools are priced per kilogram, so cost equals grams used divided by 1000, then multiplied by the price per kilogram. A 50 gram print on a 25 dollar spool is 0.05 kg times 25, which is 1.25 dollars.

Where do I find the grams a print uses?

After you slice a model, the slicer reports estimated filament use in both grams and meters. Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer all show it in the print summary. Use the gram figure here for the most accurate cost.

What is the price per gram used for?

The price per gram is simply the spool price divided by 1000. It lets you compare two spools at a glance, or multiply by any grams figure in your head without reopening the slicer.

Does this include electricity, wear or labor?

No. This calculator covers filament material only. Power draw, nozzle and belt wear, failed prints, design time and profit margin are all separate. For a full job price, use a dedicated 3D print cost calculator that layers those in.

What if I only know the length of filament used?

Convert length to weight first. A filament weight calculator uses the diameter (usually 1.75 mm) and the material density to turn meters into grams, and you then enter those grams here.

Should I add a waste allowance?

It helps for real jobs. Purge lines, skirts, brims and the occasional failed first layer all consume a little extra. Adding 3 to 5 percent to the grams before you calculate gives a safer estimate.

Does the material type change the cost?

Only through its price. PLA, PETG, ABS and nylon are all sold per kilogram, so enter whatever you paid for that specific spool. Denser materials weigh more for the same volume, which the slicer already accounts for in grams.

What is the maximum weight I can enter?

The slider caps at 2000 grams, which covers two full one-kilogram spools. If you need to price a bigger multi-spool run, calculate each spool's worth separately and add the totals.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The math runs entirely in your browser, so the weights and prices you enter never leave your device.
