How to calculate filament cost

  1. Find the grams used from your slicer estimate.
  2. Enter your spool price per kilogram.
  3. Read the total filament cost and the price per gram.

Examples

Frequently asked questions

How is filament cost calculated?

Spools are priced per kilogram, so cost equals grams used divided by 1000, times the price per kilogram. Price per gram is the spool price divided by 1000.

Where do I find the grams a print uses?

Your slicer shows estimated filament use in grams and meters after slicing. Use the gram figure for the most accurate cost.

Does this include electricity or wear?

No. This covers filament only. For a full job price including power, machine wear, labor and markup, use the 3D print cost calculator.

What if I only know the length used?

Convert length to weight first with the filament weight calculator using your diameter and material density, then enter the grams here.

Should I add a waste allowance?

Purge lines, skirts and failed first layers add a little waste. Adding 3 to 5 percent to the grams gives a safer cost estimate.
