Aquarium Water Change Calculator
Work out the volume of water to remove and replace in a partial aquarium water change. Enter your tank size in US gallons and the percent you want to change, and the tool returns the change volume in gallons and liters plus how much water is left. Tank ratings are nominal, so adjust for your real net volume.
How to use the aquarium water change calculator
- Enter your tank size in US gallons.
- Enter the percent of water you want to change.
- Read the change volume in gallons and liters and the water left behind.
Examples
25% change on a 55 gallon tank
55 gallons, change 25 percent
13.75 gallons (about 52.05 liters), 41.25 gallons left
50% change on a 20 gallon tank
20 gallons, change 50 percent
10 gallons (about 37.85 liters) replaced
Frequently asked questions
How much water should I change in an aquarium?
A common guideline is a 10 to 25 percent change every week or two for a stable, stocked tank, with larger changes to correct a problem. The right amount depends on stocking, feeding and filtration, so treat any single number as a starting point, not a rule.
How are gallons converted to liters here?
The tool uses the exact conversion of 1 US gallon to 3.785412 liters. So a 13.75 gallon change is about 52.05 liters. If your tank is rated in liters, divide by 3.785412 to get US gallons before entering it.
Should I use the rated tank size or the real volume?
Use a realistic net volume. Gravel, rock, sand and equipment displace water, so the actual volume is often 10 to 15 percent below the rated tank size. Entering net volume keeps the change amount honest and avoids overdosing treatments.
Why do partial changes instead of one big change?
Frequent partial changes dilute waste while keeping temperature, pH and hardness stable. A single very large change can swing those parameters fast and stress fish, so most keepers prefer smaller, regular changes over occasional big ones.
Do I need to match temperature and treat the new water?
Yes. Match the new water to the tank temperature and dechlorinate tap water before adding it, since chlorine and chloramine harm fish and beneficial bacteria. This tool only sizes the volume, so follow your normal conditioning routine.
