Regular Tetrahedron Calculator
A regular tetrahedron is a pyramid built from four identical equilateral triangles, so a single edge length defines the whole shape. Enter that edge and the tool returns the volume, total surface area, vertex-to-face height, and the area of one triangular face, all from exact closed-form formulas.
How to use the tetrahedron calculator
- Enter the Edge length in the field, the same value shared by all six edges.
- Use the plus and minus steppers to adjust by 0.1, or type any value up to 1000.
- Read the Volume and Surface area cards, which update instantly.
- Check the Height (vertex to opposite face) and Face area cards below.
- Press Copy result to grab all four values as text.
Examples
Edge length 6
edge = 6
volume = 25.455844, surface area = 62.353829, height = 4.898979, face area = 15.588457
Edge length 1 (unit tetrahedron)
edge = 1
volume = 0.117851, surface area = 1.732051, height = 0.816497, face area = 0.433013
Edge length 10
edge = 10
volume = 117.85113, surface area = 173.205081, height = 8.164966, face area = 43.30127
Frequently asked questions
What is a regular tetrahedron?
A regular tetrahedron is a pyramid with four faces, every one an identical equilateral triangle. All six edges share the same length, and it is the simplest of the five Platonic solids.
What is the formula for the volume of a tetrahedron?
The volume equals the edge length cubed divided by six times the square root of two. For an edge of 6 this gives 25.455844, and for a unit edge of 1 it is 0.117851.
How is the surface area found?
A regular tetrahedron has four equilateral faces, so its total surface area is the square root of three times the edge length squared. For an edge of 6 that is 62.353829.
What does the height represent?
The height is the perpendicular distance from any one vertex straight down to the opposite face. It equals the edge length times the square root of two thirds, so an edge of 6 gives a height of 4.898979.
What is the face area on its own?
Each face is an equilateral triangle with area equal to the square root of three over four, times the edge squared. That is exactly one quarter of the total surface area, since there are four equal faces.
Is a tetrahedron the same as a triangular pyramid?
A regular tetrahedron is a special triangular pyramid where all four faces are equilateral triangles. General triangular pyramids can have a different base and unequal edges, so this tool covers only the regular case.
What edge lengths can I enter, and does the unit matter?
Any positive number up to 1000. The unit is yours to choose: an edge in centimeters gives area in square centimeters and volume in cubic centimeters. Zero and negative edges are rejected.
How precise are the results?
Each value is rounded to six decimal places. Because the formulas involve the irrational constants root two and root three, the outputs are precise approximations rather than terminating decimals.
Does the calculation run privately?
Yes. Everything is computed in your browser with no server round trip and no account, so your numbers never leave your device.
