Square Pyramid Volume Calculator

Enter the base edge and height of a square pyramid to find its volume, slant height, lateral surface area, base area and total surface area.

How to find the volume of a square pyramid

  1. Enter the length of the square base edge.
  2. Enter the vertical height from base to apex.
  3. Read the volume, slant height and surface areas instantly.

Examples

Base edge 6, height 4

base edge = 6, height = 4
volume = 48, slant height = 5, lateral area = 60, total area = 96

Base edge 10, height 12

base edge = 10, height = 12
volume = 400, slant height = 13, total area = 360

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for the volume of a square pyramid?

The volume equals the base area times the height divided by three. The base area is the base edge squared.

How is the slant height calculated?

The slant height is the square root of half the base edge squared plus the height squared. It runs up the middle of a triangular face.

What is the lateral surface area?

The lateral area is the four triangular faces without the base. It equals two times the base edge times the slant height.

How is the total surface area found?

Add the square base to the lateral area. This gives the base edge squared plus two times the base edge times the slant height.

Does this work for any pyramid?

This tool assumes a right pyramid with a square base and the apex above the centre. Other base shapes need a different calculator.
