Frequently asked questions

How is percentage change calculated?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the absolute original value, then multiply by 100. From 50 to 75 is (75 - 50) / 50 = 50%.

What does a negative result mean?

A negative percentage means the value went down. Going from 100 to 80 is a 20% decrease, shown as -20%.

Why can't the starting value be zero?

Percentage change divides by the original value, and dividing by zero is undefined, so a starting value of 0 has no meaningful percent change.

What is the difference between percent change and percent of?

Percent change compares two values over time. Percent of asks what share one number is of another, such as 25 being 12.5% of 200.
