Fraction to Decimal Converter

Turn a fraction into its decimal value. Enter the numerator and denominator to see the result, and find out whether the decimal stops or repeats forever.

How to convert a fraction to a decimal

  1. Type the numerator (the top number) into the first field.
  2. Type the denominator (the bottom number) into the second field.
  3. Read the decimal value and the note on whether it terminates or repeats.

Examples

Terminating decimal

3/8
0.375

Repeating decimal

1/7
0.(142857)

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a terminating and a repeating decimal?

A terminating decimal ends after a finite number of digits, like 0.375. A repeating decimal goes on forever with a block of digits that cycles, like 0.333... A fraction repeats only when its reduced denominator has a prime factor other than 2 or 5.

How is a repeating decimal shown here?

The repeating block is wrapped in parentheses. For example, 1/3 is shown as 0.(3) and 1/7 as 0.(142857), where the digits inside the parentheses repeat without end.

Why does the decimal value look rounded?

The numeric decimal is a standard floating-point number, so very long values are rounded for display. The parentheses notation is the exact answer and shows the full repeating pattern with no rounding.

How does the converter work?

It performs long division of the numerator by the denominator and tracks each remainder. If a remainder repeats, the digits in between form the repeating block. If a remainder reaches zero, the decimal terminates.

Can I enter an improper fraction or a negative fraction?

Yes. Improper fractions like 5/2 give a value above one (2.5), and a negative sign on either number makes the result negative. The denominator cannot be zero.

Is my input sent to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you enter never leave your device.
